Hindi films, this year, explored almost each kind of music, from going back to roots of Indian folk to introducing dubstep, giving us a wide spectrum of joy. Looking back at this memorable year with all the lovely albums it gave and ranking them was as interesting as listening to them. Read on, have fun:
1. Gangs Of Wasseypur (Sneha Khanwalkar / Varun Grover, Piyush Mishra)
Well, already enough has been said by me (here) on how the team succeeded in discovering the real music of North India.
Rounding up: 14 crackling songs packed into this one hell of an album, all well-researched and with a distinct flavour of soil. Fairly, the best of this year!
Memorable songs: Jiya Tu, Hunter, O Womaniya, Keh Ke Lunga
2. BARFI! (Pritam / Swanand Kirkire, Saeed Quadri, Ashish Pandit, Neelesh Mishra)
It's after years that an album by Pritam has made it to the top. He certainly preserves his best for Anurag Basu (Life in a... Metro). With BARFI!, Pritam has reinvented himself to deliver his career's best and one of the best this year!
An extra song was released online, Fatafati, which is again very interesting and comical.
Memorable songs: Barfi!, Phir Le Aaya Dil, Aashiyan, Kyon
3. Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 (Sneha Khanwalkar / Varun Grover, Piyush Mishra)
The continued part of the album had yet another 13 mind-blowing tracks which had folk and electronic sounds in proportions enough to blast your speakers off. Gangs Of Wasseypur, on the whole, is Sneha 'sound-tripper' Khanwalkar's career-defining album.

4. Ishaqzaade (Amit Trivedi / Kausar Munir, Habib Faisal)
Of all the 5 albums this young maestro gave us this year, Ishaqzaade comes up as his best! From a dubstep to a dandiya based track to a mujra track, this had it all and with what genius!

5. Kahaani (Vishal - Shekhar / Anvita Dutt, Vishal Dadlani, Sandeep Srivastava)
With classical sounds interestingly blended with new age music, this mild yet heavy album evokes the very essence of Kolkatta. The duo composers seemed to have stepped out of their comfort zone for this one. Devoid of noisy remixes, Kahaani is deservedly among the best of this year.

6. Agneepath (Ajay - Atul / Amitabh Bhattacharya)
Ajay - Atul might have went unnoticed in their earlier albums (Singham, My Friend Pinto). But with Agneepath, they have made their mark and how! Apart from reusing their famous Marathi tune for an item song, they have brilliantly portrayed heavy drama with the orchestrations in their songs.
Memorable songs: Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin, O Saiyyan
7. Aiyyaa (Amit Trivedi / Amitabh Bhattacharya)
This album had some trashing for its ridiculous lyrics. But you just cannot ignore Amit Trivedi going insanely wacky with this one, having his trademark style all over it. With 'Go wakda (crooked)' as the tagline of the film, this album truly stands on it.
Memorable songs: Dreamum Wakeupum, Aga Bai
8. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (Amit Trivedi / Shelle)
Amit Trivedi, yet again! He owned 2012!
A very meaty album with the authentic aroma of Punjab in it; comes very close to Khanwalkar's Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye! (2008) Some very comical song, some very heartening. You shouldn't have missed this one this year.
Memorable ones: KikliKalerdi, Motorwada, Luni Hasi
9. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (A R Rahman / Gulzar)
Yes, Jab Tak Hai Jaan in my top list.
After the release, we were disappointed that its more of an YRF album than ARR's. It's not that bad, though. ARR's songs do grow on you after a time. This one, too, has managed to, somehow. May be after watching the film that justified the score? Obviously, not what we were expecting from the maestros in collaboration, but had some memorable songs, nevertheless.
Memorable ones: Heer, Challa
10. Cocktail (Pritam / Irshad Kamil, Amitabh Bhattacharya)
Another one by Pritam in the top list. His songs do create buzz enough, as soon as they release, to be the chartbuster. This one was no different. And mildly fresh too. He was, indeed, on a roll this year.
Memorable songs: Tumhi Ho Bandhu, Daaru Desi, Yaariyan, Jugni
